TYPES OF LINGUISTIC PERSONALITIES OF FICTIONAL CHARACTERS IN MULTIMODAL INTRAPERSONAL CONFLICTIVES

Abstract

The current paper presents an overview of intrapersonal conflictives as discursive constructs in modern English fictional discourse from the viewpoint of theory of communication, psycholinguistics and cognitive and pragmatic approach to the analysis of linguistic units. Based on the structural-functional approach to identifying functionally coherent fragments in fictional discourse, this paper proposes an examination of the features of multimodal intrapersonal conflicts within the semiotic space of fictional discourse.The vertical structure of intrapersonal conflictives allows them to be viewed as acts of autocommunication. An aspectual analysis of intrapersonal conflictives revealed the characteristics of their multimodal, pragmatic, communicative, and dynamic structure.Moreover, a detailed analysis of the three-level model for studying linguistic personality in discourse–at the verbal- semantic, cognitive, and pragmatic levels–along with the examination of conflict resolution methods and the nature of internal contradictions modeled in literary works, enabled the distinction between destructive and constructive types of linguistic personalities in intrapersonal conflict.The research also aims to establish a link between different approaches to the interpretation of conflict communication development and methods of their research in modern linguistic studies. The multimodal nature of conflictives enables the inclusion of various modes of multimodality in analyzing conflict speech situations within fictional discourse, allowing us to identify meanings conveyed both through the author's narrative and the characters' speech. The obtained results show the decoding potential of interpreting conflict interpersonal and intrapersonal communication at different levels of linguistic analysis to achieve the corresponding aims.
