GENESIS AND TYPOLOGY OF THE DETECTIVE GENRE: IDEOLOGY AND ARTISTIC QUEST

Abstract

This relevance of this study of the detective genre is determined by its two-dimension ambiguity. From a diachronic point of view even the most ancient literature bears some features of detective narration and at the same time detective story as a separate and independent literary genre is comparatively young. From the textual point of view and in regard to the target audience, detective stories are substantially an example of mass literature, bearing however certain intellectualism. Detective stories quite often not only serve to amuse their readers, but raise complicated questions and dilemmas of morality and ethics. The problem of this study includes investigation of certain historical prerequisites of the separation of detective story into a different genre from the adventure novel, as well as the investigation of its features in historical context. The research methodology includes analysis of the development of literature in the context of historical periods, focusing on the process of acceleration and finalization of colonization, as well as the leveling of genre studies-related approaches of other scholars to typology for detective. The first part of the article examines the historical background of the detective story, and the influence of European colonization and its finalization on the formation of adventure literature and the rise of the detective genre. The article demonstrates the difference between typical character drawings, which were propagated by adventure and detective stories and speculates about the reasons for their occurrence in the focus of the authors. The second part is focused on the history aspects of the typology of detective stories, and the influence of the tradition of orientalism on genre features.
