Abstract

The article presents a semantic analysis of connotatively charged military vocabulary used in the Ukrainian media space, particularly in the context of information wars and global conflicts. It identifies key issues related to the linguacultural adaptation of such lexical units when translated into English and French. Special attention is given to the emotive-evaluative colouring of military vocabulary, which has a significant impact on public opinion and political sentiments. It is established that emotive-evaluative lexical units (words and phrases) are not only capable of conveying facts but also of shaping stereotypical images (of the aggressor, hero, or victim), and are thus actively employed in media discourse to manipulate public consciousness. The adequacy of rendering emotive-evaluative military vocabulary in English and French requires the use of various translation transformations, such as modulation, concretization, generalization, and descriptive translation. These contribute to the linguacultural adaptation of media texts to the linguistic and cultural characteristics of each language, which is critically important in the context of intercultural communication. The analysis demonstrates that the linguacultural adaptation of military vocabulary in different linguistic spaces is driven by cultural differences and the need to preserve the emotional-evaluative and informational content of the original. The article also emphasizes the role of media in shaping ideas that reflect socio-political contexts in times of war and highlights the influence of geopolitical factors on the choice of military terminology, which, in turn, affects how war is perceived by different social groups. It addresses the challenges of linguacultural adaptation of military vocabulary within international relations, which requires particular sensitivity to context and the emotive-evaluative nuances of military language.
