RENDERING STYLISTIC DEVICES IN THE TRANSLATION PROCESS: THE OVERVIEW OF OVERSEAS TRANSLATION STUDIES

Abstract

The article examines the experience of foreign translation studies in the context of the stylistic aspect of language functioning in various texts and the ways of its reproduction by means of the target language. The work is relevant because the use of figurative language (tropes) makes communication successful and allows not only to convey the message content, but also to reproduce emotional, evaluative and expressive textual information to enhance the necessary effect on the audience. The purpose of the study is to summarize the approaches of foreign translation studies to solving the problem of reproducing tropes in translation in order to define the conceptual apparatus and clarify the essence of the basic concepts of modern Translation Studies. The analysis of foreign scientific publications shows that the investigation object of translation scholars has been such elements of figurative language as metaphor, metonymy, simile and pun. It is noted that metaphor is the first figure that scholars began to consider in the translation context, and the ways of its translation, according to the author's analysis, became the basis and are reflected in various classifications of ways of reproducing other tropes in the target language. The author of the article explains this fact based on C. Denroche’s point of view, in which metaphor and metonymy are the two key tropes and generalizing terms that subordinate the entire field of traditionally defined figures. It is clear that this similarity between tropes allows us to use common strategies and tools for their translation and to save translator’s time. The paper summarizes the experience of overseas translation studies in reproducing metaphor by means of the target language over almost 60 years.
