«THE BEGINNING AND THE END ARE IN THE NAME»: THE ANTHROPONYMICON OF MARIA MATIOS’S PROSE

Abstract

The article analyses the structural and semantic features and associative and symbolic potential of proprietary vocabulary in Maria Matios’s prose discourses in a multifaceted and comprehensive manner; it also reveals the linguistic, ethnomental and socio-cultural specificity of the individual artistic anthroponymicon as a special imaginary thought and axiological phenomenon. The fictional anthroponymicon of prose is reflected as the most sensitive, relevant, and informative segment of the linguistic comprehension of the world through the prism of names. It is noted that the diverse linguopoetic studies of anthroponyms inspire a deep reception, interpretation and awareness of the implicit meanings; proprietary lexemes function not only as linguistic units, but also primarily as «living cells» that generate «clots» of linguistic phenomena of archetypal, ethnomental, socio-cultural, axiological and associative plan. It is stated that most of the characters are based on reality, so the author had to disguise the narrative with other, but conceptually close names, surnames, and nicknames. It is suggested that Maria Matios is meticulous and demanding in the selection of names (proper names, surnames, patronymics, nicknames, pseudonyms, andronyms) of characters, which inspires the need for an unconventional comprehension of the writer’s literary intention and the embodiment of the author’s narrative strategies, as well as axiological and conceptual intentions, which are concisely expressed in the name and its significant formants. It is generalised that the anthroponymicon of Maria Matios’s prose testifies to the author’s proficiency in the selection of capacious, semantically deep and organic proprietary lexemes in both micro and macro contexts, which serve as explicants of regional anthroponyms, mental and psychological characteristics of the characters, cement the event frame, act as historical, axiological, ethnocultural markers and relevant intentional associations.
