FROM PROLISOK TO SMART KIDS: ONYMIC OPPOSITION IN THE SYSTEM OF PRESCHOOL EDUCATION

This article examines the names of preschool educational institutions as units of public linguistic space and markers of sociocultural identity. The focus of the study is the onymic opposition between the names of public and private educational institutions, which manifests itself through distinct motivational models, structural types, and semantic content. The relevance of analyzing educational institution names as carriers of symbolic capital is substantiated, as such capital can offer communities long-term advantages in sociocultural, ideological, and communicative domains.Based on material collected in the Bucha and Irpin communities of Kyiv region during 2024–2025, the study reveals a tendency toward the dominance of nationally marked, single-word names in the public sector (e.g., Morkvynka, Soloveyko, Zernyatko) and two-word names, often with foreign-language elements, in the private sector (e.g., Funny Bunny, Happy Land, Rainbow Garden). Most names arise from the onymization of lexemes that represent concepts of intellectual development, positive emotions, the natural world, and associations with arts and beauty. The motivation behind these naming units is predominantly metaphorical or symbolic, which contributes to their connotative richness and cultural relevance.Particular attention is paid to the symbolic function of names as a tool for conveying value orientations, ideological positions, and collective memory within educational discourse. It is argued that PEI names reflect a semiotic opposition between globalized and national identities, mirroring broader processes of symbolic transformation in the public space of a postcolonial society. The article also analyzes existing legal and regulatory frameworks governing preschool educational institutions’ naming practices and identifies the causes of semiotic imbalance and inconsistency in this area. The findings may be applied in the development of language policy and the formulation of culturally grounded naming strategies in education.
