GENERATIVE PROCESSES IN THE TOPONYMIC SYSTEM (ACCORDING TO THE MATERIALS OF THE UKRAINIAN TOPONYMS ETYMOLOGICAL DICTIONARY BY V. V. LUCHYK)

Abstract

Contemporary national lexicography is a special area of linguistic science in which the inseparable connection and mutual conditionality of theoretical and applied aspects crystallise an extraordinary view of the powerful linguistic material, its processing and comprehension, the identification of integral, relatively independent and self- sufficient units and their interpretation in terms of the correlation between form and content.The language in all manifestations of its structure and system provides the lexicographer with invaluable facts of dynamic development in spatial and temporal dimensions, which testify to its creative potential. It is the creative potential of language and the dynamics of its realisation in speech activity, concentrated primarily in the word, that prompts scholars to search for lexicographic forms of representation of linguistic phenomena and their explanation, and thus to create various types of dictionaries.The Dictionary explains the origin of about 3 700 modern and historical place names – geographical objects of Ukraine, including cities, towns, rivers, lakes, and mountains. Place names as lexical and semantic units of the language are very diverse in form and content and difficult for etymological and reconstruction interpretation. The complexity of each word-toponym, lexicographically interpreted by V. V. Luchyk in the Dictionary of Ukrainian Toponyms as a multilayered and multifaceted formal and semantic linguistic unit, determines not only the search for the source of its formation, explanation of structure-forming phenomena and its semantic essence definition, but also the need to identify and study the generative processes that influence its development and ensure stability in the spatial and temporal dimension of the language.
