THE MODERN URBAN SPACE OF KROPYVNYTSKYI

Abstract

The urban space of a city is the expression of its cultural and historical frame. Due to the change in historic and political events, there is an active retitling of the names of streets, squares, avenues, and boulevards. The research aims to analyze the modern urban system of the city of Kropyvnytskyi, to identify trends in renaming, motives for nominations, and to establish the motivational, lexical-semantic, functional-pragmatic specificity of the modern urban space of Kropyvnytskyi.The issue of describing the modern urban space of Kropyvnytskyi, identifying renaming trends, motives for nominations, analysing the motivational, lexical and semantic, functional and pragmatic specificity of the modern urban space of Kropyvnytskyi is relevant. The urbanonyms reflect the stateʼs policy, ethnic and cultural specificity of the city. The vast majority are commemorative names that convey information about the history and culture of the city. The cityʼs onymous and appealing names reflect the modern Ukrainian realities and meet historical, ethnographic, aesthetic and cultural criteria.The urban names of Kropyvnytskyi comply with the principles of the Ukrainian toponymy, reflect the current ideological policy of the state, and represent the ethnic and cultural specifics of the city. The memorial names (carrying information about the history of the region and the state) are dominated in urbanonomicon of Kropyvnytskyi.According to the semantics of the constituent bases, the godonyms of Kropyvnytskyi are divided into the names which are derived from onyms and appellatives. The hodonyms of Kropyvnytskyi are democratic, pro-Ukrainian in nature, and correspond to the ideas and trends of the Ukrainian place name system. The most dynamic subgroup includes the names in honor of heroes and died heroes of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as well as in honor of local prominent figures, scientists, artists, historical names, and names that characterize the area. The study of the new godonyms of Kropyvnytskyi creates the modern language picture of the cityʼs urban space. The newly formed hodonyms of Kropyvnytskyi are formed by lexical and semantic (varieties of this method – transonymization, ononymization), morphological and morphological-syntactic methods.
