TRANSLATION DEFORMATIONS IN TRANSLATION OF MODERN PROSE (CASE STUDY: THE NOVEL «ІНТЕРНАТ» BY SERHIY ZHADAN AND ITS TRANSLATION "THE ORPHANAGE: A NOVEL")

The article is devoted to the analysis of translation deformations on the syntactic level in modern prose translation. Literary translation is interpreted as a complex creative process that result of which is a new text with the preserved (to the maximum extent) content and conceptual information, but with deformations of formal linguistic syntactic-stylistic and pragmatic features of the source text of various degree, which may lead to distortions of the characteristics of imagery of the source text, deviations from the author’s creative intent, etc. It has been proved that translation deformations of different level are unavoidable in literary translation and are mainly determined by the subjective concept of a translator within the translation strategy chosen. Syntactic deformations include substitution of several simple sentences for composite sentences – both compound and complex, changes in the order of sentences within a paragraph, changes in the order of sentence members, omissions of repetitions or parallel constructions, punctuation different from the author’s one, translators’ additions and omissions of sentence members or parenthetical phrases, etc. It has been defined that usage of syntactic structures different from the ones in the source text may be determined by objective factors, namely systemic differences of the two languages, as well as subjective factors, i.e. conscious translators’ choice under the influence of the chosen translation strategy. Syntactic deformations may change the pace of narration, violate logical relations among parts of sentences and hence the events described, provide target text readers with wrong image of the situation and characters’ inner state. Therefore, conceptual-content and genre-stylistic features of the source text are deformed, as well as its associative-figurative, emotional-evaluative and suggestive-symbolic components, communicative intention of the author, imagery created in the source text.
