THE TRANSLATION PECULIARITIES OF ENGLISH SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REALIA IN THE CONTEXT OF THE RUSSIANUKRAINIAN WAR

Abstract

The globalization processes lead to the active spread of information nowadays, and the English language as a lingua franca plays a pivotal role in it. The actual problem is the clarification of the approaches to the translation of social and political realia that illustrate the events of the ongoing full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. The article is dedicated to the analysis of the peculiar features of the translation of English social and political realia into the Ukrainian language which has been selected from CNN News and BBC News media for the last quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 respectively. The structure of the illustrative material has been taken into consideration. It has also been specified the definitions of the terms «realia» and «social and political realia», as well as the classifications for them. The scope of methods and approaches to the translation of English realia into Ukrainian by V. Karaban and I. Korunets has been outlined. The practical part of the investigation reveals some vivid examples of social and political realia. The choice of the illustrative material relied on the classifications developed by I. Balanyk and K. Razumna: political organizations and party names, administrative division names; nominations of state structure nuances; names of social and political events and terms; military nominations (unit names, positions, ranks, equipment, etc.). The results of the analysis demonstrate the prevailing methods of translation of such lexemes (calque translation and transcoding), and less popular ones (descriptive translation and various contextual transformation approaches).
