Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the debut novel "Natalia", written by the Quebec writer Chantal Harand.
The work is available thanks to the translation of the Lviv publishing house by Anetta Antonenko. As a special type
of dialogue between different cultures, translation has a number of special techniques. It is designed to best reflect
the stylistic features of the original work. Such techniques are also used for the considered novel. Linguistic-cultural
specificity and reflection of the author's individual style in the work are determined. Among the methods used for
researching the work is biographical, which belongs to literary studies. Among the linguistic methods are descriptive
and contextual analysis. Lexical realities occupy a significant place in the novel. Lexical realities are presented in
different languages, mostly German and English, much less French. Many lexical realities are associated with the
events of World War II. Most of these expressions are explained and translated into French by the author herself, in
the same sentence. This allows the reader not to be distracted by notes. The use of the German language is due to the biography of the main character. The characters' passion for music is reflected through quotes in English. A few
Latin aphorisms denote concepts important to the writer. Phraseological units are a distinctive feature of the writer's
individual style. In addition to standard phraseological units in different languages, there are also transformed and
individually authored ones. Thanks to such units, the effect of double actualization and gradation is created. The
content of such units is used to create an ironic context. Among the symbols used in the work is the religious image
of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Also among the symbols is a family tree as the basis of the plot and a basic concept for
the characters. The main tropes of the novel are investigated – epithets, comparisons, rhetorical questions, ellipsis,
gradation, parcellation, tautology, aposiopesis, polysyndeton. A novel written by a foreign author about the fate of a
Ukrainian Jewish woman who survived the war. It forces readers to think about many important questions.
