INTERCULTURAL PARALLELS OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: PATHS TO MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING

Abstract

The article explores the application of nonverbal communication in intercultural interactions. The significance of nonverbal cues in the communication process is highlighted, emphasizing their role not only in duplicating or replacing verbal communication but also in confirming or contradicting verbal messages and enriching the content of spoken statements. The concept of "cultural" nonverbal behavior, which reflects the traditions and national character of specific peoples or ethnic groups, is analyzed. The study examines the role of nonverbal communication in modern linguistics and its critical importance in intercultural communication, an area that has become increasingly significant for contemporary research. Various types of hand and finger gestures are characterized, and their communicative functions are discussed. The role of specific gestures, such as pointing, gestures of approval, admiration, greeting, farewell, numerical symbolism, and contemptuous gestures, is described. Notably, it is shown that these gestures may hold opposite meanings in different cultural contexts, occasionally carrying offensive or threatening connotations. Special attention is given to nonverbal signs that could lead to misunderstandings in intercultural interactions. Groups characterized by extensive use of gestures, such as Greeks, Italians, and French, are identified, as well as cultures where gesticulation is minimal, such as those in the East, the Muslim world, and English-speaking countries. The article concludes that studying the gestures of other cultures can help avoid misunderstandings in intercultural communication. It enables individuals to gain a deeper understanding of the target culture, fostering respect and appreciation for its unique modes of interaction. Mastery of a foreign language's verbal system should be complemented by proficiency in nonverbal communication tools to ensure more effective and conflict-free interactions between individuals from different cultural backgrounds.
