TRANSLATION SOLUTIONS IN THE ANIMATED FILM «MAVKA. THE FOREST SONG»

Abstract

The research paper investigates the peculiarities of the English-Ukrainian translation of the animated film «Mavka. The Forest Song». The author substantiates the study’s relevance from the standpoint of modern linguistics and translation studies. The article highlights the peculiarities of text localization, an adaptation of culturally specific elements, conveying humor, irony, and pragmatic content of the original, analyzes numerous examples of the adaptation of lexical units, phraseological units, and idiomatic expressions, and substantiates the importance of their compliance with the local cultural context. We focused on preserving the pragmatic effect achieved through creative approaches to translating wordplay, puns, and rhyming fragments. When translating animated films, it is necessary to consider the differences in mental and cultural traditions. Analyzing the reproduction of comic elements in translation, the article reveals the systematic nature of various linguistic and stylistic techniques and means. Their choice and the ability to use them ensure adequate meaning reproduction, which should be accessible to representatives of other linguistic cultures. The results of the study demonstrate that the translation solutions implemented in the animated film «Mavka. The Forest Song» effectively fulfill the task of localization, adapting the text to the cultural and linguistic peculiarities of the Ukrainian audience. The translators have successfully integrated Ukrainian realities, mainly through idioms, phrases, and stylistic devices that emphasize the local flavor and make the text close to the spoken Ukrainian language. Ukrainian phraseology helped preserve the original’s meaning and achieve a similar emotional effect while ensuring an organic perception of the text.
