INTERLEVEL NATURE OF GRAMMATICAL PERSON IN UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article attempts to determine the interlevel nature of grammatical person category in Ukrainian language on the basis of functional-categorical grammar. Grammatical person constitutes the center of semantics of personhood, it is reflected in morphological structure of the verb with the help of special morphological and syntactic indicators; it is inherent not only to the verb, but also to the noun; plays a significant role in the structural-semantic and communicative organization of the sentence. The article analyses the meanings of grammatical person reflected in the morphological structure of the verb with the help of its own grammatical indicators in their connection with the semantics of pronominal nouns, and projects them into the sphere of communicative syntax. The analysis of the formal-grammatical and semantic aspects of grammatical person attests to their connection with other linguistic levels. In formal terms, the scope of grammatical person of the verb in modern Ukrainian language is limited only to personal forms that have in their composition markers of person: personal inflectional suffixes. At the same time, inflected verbs are in close connection with pronominal nouns. The center of the morphological embodiment of personhood as an interlevel categorical formation is the grammatical person category that has been adopted by the verb, and semantically grammatical person of the noun is central. The category of person also finds its expression at the syntactic level. The tagmemes of the speaker and the addressee are directly subordinate to the subcategory of person, while the tagmemes of the non-participant distinguish people, other beings, or objects that do not participate in communicative acts. Grammatical person can be qualified as interlevel, as it is manifested at the levels of morphology, semanticsyntactic structure of the sentence and communicative syntax. At the formal level, the core of the interlevel category of grammatical person corresponds to morphological person, and at the level of semantics, the person of the noun is central.
