METHODS OF TERM FORMATION IN THE UKRAINIAN TERMINOLOGICAL SYSTEM OF THE ENERGY SECTOR

Abstract

The constant development of science and technology puts forward the need to nominate new concepts of various fields. The study of the regularities of the formation of terminological vocabulary is considered one of the urgent tasks of modern linguistics. The article examines the processes of term formation in Ukrainian terminology of the energy industry in order to identify dominant trends in it. The material of the study is Ukrainian terminological units of professional language, selected from modern sources. Attention is focused on the morphological and syntactic methods of creating terminological units, which are considered the main sources of replenishment of the vocabulary of the modern Ukrainian language. The analysis of the features of affixation, compounding, abbreviation is carried out. The study of the syntactic method of term formation is carried out by analyzing terminological compounds, within which productive word-forming models are identified. The percentage ratio of single- and multi-component terms is determined. Two structural types of terms have been identified: single-component and multi-component, with the latter predominating. For single-component terms, morphological word formation is the most productive. Derivative terms are most often formed by means of suffixal and prefixal-suffixal methods. One of the most productive ways of forming Ukrainian energy terms is compounding, which occurs more often in single-component terms than in multicomponent ones. Quantitatively, the largest share among multi-component constructions is made up of two- and three-component word compounds. Abbreviation is used to form single-component and multi-component terms, but it is not very common. In the analyzed terminology, no examples of the morphological-syntactic method of word formation have been found. There is a tendency towards the growth of the syntactic way of word formation, which is explained by the need for constant specification of many concepts.
