The article is devoted to the animated film – a special type of creolized text, formed by a combination of verbal and non-verbal semiotic signs. The role of modern animation as a means of understanding reality, its essence and functions are determined. Special attention is paid to audiovisual translation, the main goal of which is to achieve adequacy. Equivalence of translation of an audiovisual product is the correspondence between verbal and nonverbal structures in the original and translated texts. The main task of a media translator to achieve adequacy is not only the skillful use of the four main channels of information, but also taking into account the genre specificity of animation, the method of its creation and the target age category. From a linguistic point of view, an animated film is a type of media discourse. The language of an animated film is diverse and heterogeneous. The dialogical speech of the characters is rich in emotionally expressive vocabulary, figurative elements, phraseological units, proverbs, jokes, puns, allusions and realia. In animated film, realia are words and phrases that reflect objects and phenomena related to everyday life, culture, art, geography, history, government, social life, etc. The object of this investigation is the peculiarities of the realia functioning in the English-language animated films. The subject is the methods of English-language realia translation into Ukrainian. The material of the study is represented by a series of American animated films of the “Madagascar” franchise, as well as their translations into Ukrainian. During the analysis of the film texts of American animated films of the “Madagascar” franchise, thematic groups of realia were identified. Among them are ethnographic, geographical, socio-political realia, character names realia, purely linguistic realia. The main methods of realia translation based on the material of the animated films are studied: transcoding, loan translation, approximate translation, descriptive and contextual translation. Adequate translation of realia includes many aspects: stylistic and genre affiliation of the text, linguistic features of realia, their significance and function in the text. Studying the features of realia functioning and methods of their translation is a promising direction of linguistic research aimed at enriching Ukrainian translation studies and popularizing English-speaking culture.
