UKRAINIAN TERMINOLOGY IN THE FIELD OF PHYSICAL CULTURE AND SPORTS: ORIGINS, FORMATION, FEATURES

Abstract

The article examines the origins, specifics of the formation in the national terminology of physical culture and sports, as well as its lexical, semantic and grammatical features at the present stage. It is proved that theoretical study of sectoral terminology systems is an urgent problem of modern science, since scientific terminology records human achievements and new scientific concepts. The terminology of any field is created and standardized along with side the development of this science. The purpose of the study is to consider the formation of sports terminology in the context of the historical development `for the sports and cultural movement in Ukraine, as well as to clarify and deepen knowledge about the relevant terminology at the present stage. The author shows that the Ukrainian sports terminology system began to form in the late nineteenth century and during this period the national basis was laid down for its system using the heritage of other languages for further development. It is proved that the emergence of sports and gymnastic societies and Ukrainian-language sports periodicals contributed to the emergence of the first sports terms. The article substantiates that the formation of the sports terminology system took place in close connection with the peculiarities of the historical development in the physical culture and sports movement in Ukraine, as well as in the context of the Ukrainian lands to become part of other state entities. In the sphere of physical culture and sports the modern terminology is analyzed and classified according to the defining criteria. The modern terminology in the field of physical culture and sports has been analyzed and classified according to lexicalsemantic paradigms. The tendencies in part-of-speech are established, the syntagmatic characteristics of the studied terminology have been traced, the main ways of creating terms and term combinations have been recorded, as well as non-standard terminological units have been selected to appropriate equivalents. The necessity of directing in the focus of scientific attention to the historical experience of terminology creation in the course of further study in sports terminology and its active use in the processes of standardization and unification is substantiated at the present stage.
