Abstract

English-language terminologisms are studied in the article from the point of view of their origin and functioning. That’s why the definitions of the notions terminologism, professional sublanguage, communicative sphere, phraseologization, prolatent terminologization are given in the article, sublanguages of the sphere of sport from which English-language terminologisms originate, as well as communicative spheres of their use are characterized in it. Terminologism is viewed in the article as a terminological unit, subjected to phraseologization, revealed in acquiring stable meaning due to its rethinking and transposition. Prolatent terminologization is a process opposite to the phraseologization, revealed in acquiring of terminological meaning by a terminologism. Many English-language terminologisms were formed on the basis of terms from the sphere of sport. This sphere is not homogeneous. That’s why many professional sublanguages function in its subspheres. Professional sublanguage is viewed in the article as a language used in a special sphere or subsphere of knowledge or professional activity of people. The notion of the professional sublanguage should be differentiated from the notion communicative sphere that is viewed by us as any sphere of communication united by a common aim and situational conditions of transmission or perception of information. Many English-language terminologisms originate from sport terminology. It can be explained by positive attitude of British and American people towards sport, the fact of emerging of some kinds of sport in their countries. That is why sublanguages of equestrian sport, box, cricket and baseball are main sources of emergence of terminologisms. Such units also originate from the sublanguages of billiards, tennis, rowing, shooting. Due to rethinking and transposition of meaning they become part and parcel of a general literary language. Key spheres of their further functioning are fiction, social and political journalism. Due to the process of prolatent terminologization terminologisms become terms, political ones in particular. Such terms are used not only in the spheres of political communication, but in fiction and social and political journalism as well.
