Abstract

The studies of translation transformations in literary texts are of increasing relevance due to the constant flow of international literature and the growing interest in the works of Oscar Wilde in the Ukrainian context. The article offers a unique approach to the study of translation transformations dedicated to the translations of the fairy tales “The Devoted Friend” and “The Happy Prince” into Ukrainian. The main purpose of the article is to analyze the translation transformations used in the translation of Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales by translator I.V. Korunets and to determine their impact on the quality and relevance of the original. Particular emphasis is placed on the lexical, grammatical and stylistic aspects of the translation, which are used to adapt the text to the Ukrainian language and cultural environment. To achieve this goal, the article applies the methods of analysis and comparison. An in-depth analysis of lexical transformations, such as loan translation, descriptive translation, synonymous and contextual substitutions, as well as grammatical transformations, including replacement and text partitioning, is carried out. Stylistic transformations, such as logization, expressivation, modernization, and archaization, are also analyzed to determine their impact on the overall expression and artistic meaning of the texts. The obtained findings indicate that certain transformations can contribute to the adaptation of the text to the target language and its understanding by the audience, but at the same time they can affect the reproduction of the artistic value, depth of meaning and emotional content of the original and moral values of the original texts. The findings of this study can be useful for translation specialists, literary scholars, and anyone interested in translation and cultural heritage preservation.
