MARKERS OF RACIAL IDENTIFICATION IN ENGLISH PUBLICISTICS: TRANSLATION SOLUTIONS

The article considers the translational aspects of racial identifiers into Ukrainian and determined the most efficient ways of translation according to the unique characteristics of publicistic contexts analyzed. The efficient translational solutions for conforming political correctness and tolerance while translating racial markers were suggested. The paper considers the publicistic translation as a separate type of translation, regarding its goals, functions and terminology spheres. It is stated that the language of journalism is gradually getting rid of racial bias, setting specific policies and standards for translation as well. Studying the translation aspect of racial identifiers vocabulary based on fragments of English-language journalistic discourse allowed us to state the peculiarities of the translation of journalism in general and markers of ethnicity in particular. The article gives empirical examples of racial markers translations, revealing successful solutions that contribute to maintaining pragmatism and political correctness. It was stated, that a translator should closely observe the equivalents range in the Ukrainian language in order to choose the most conforming. The cases analysis showed, that one-lexeme markers could be translated the easiest, however, they are comparatively more racially biased. However, two- and more component structures of racial markers, though, state the most difficulty for translation due to the extent of lexemes included, obtain better unbiased meaning. The study describes the algorithms of translation actions aimed at preserving the adequacy and equivalence of maintenance for cases when the accurate Ukrainian-language equivalent is absent or may obtain dysphemical sense. The article highlights the necessity of elaborating efficient unified translational decisions in order to convey the publicistic message in a politically correct tone.
