THE COSSACK WORLD IN THE WORKS OF HRYHORII KOLISNYK: INTERPRETATION OF CHRONICLES IN THE WRITER’S PROSE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the artistic interpretation of the figure of Ivan Mazepa in the novel
Mazepa–Hetman by Hryhorii Kolisnyk. The study focuses on the interpretation of the hetman’s image as a complex
historical and psychological figure that combines the features of a statesman, a political strategist, and a tragic hero.
It is emphasized that the Cossack theme in Ukrainian literature plays an important role in shaping national
historical memory, while the figure of Mazepa has for centuries provoked controversial assessments − from
accusations of treason to recognition of him as a fighter for Ukraine’s state independence.
The article examines the source base of the novel, particularly the author’s use of chronicle materials, primarily
the Chronicle of Samiilo Velychko, as well as historical documents, letters, and universals (official decrees). It
is noted that the combination of documentary evidence with artistic interpretation creates an effect of historical
authenticity and at the same time allows for a deeper revelation of the hero’s inner world. Kolisnyk does not limit himself to the traditional chronicle narrative but focuses on the psychological motivations of Mazepa’s actions,
employing internal monologues, confessional reflections, dreams, and symbolic images.
The study emphasizes the state-building concept of the hetman’s image, which forms the ideological basis of
the novel. Mazepa appears not as a traitor but as a far-sighted politician and patriot who strives to liberate Ukraine
from foreign domination and establish it as an independent state. Particular attention is paid to the depiction of his
patronage activities, his support for education and culture, and his role in the development of the spiritual life of
society at that time.
It is stressed that the writer deliberately avoids idealizing the hero, portraying him as a living person with internal
contradictions, strong emotions, and moral doubts. As a result, the image of Mazepa acquires the features of a tragic
statesman whose fate is closely intertwined with the dramatic history of Ukraine.
