THE CONCEPT OF LANGUAGE IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY UKRAINIAN STUDIES: SYSTEMATIZATION OF APPROACHES AND AN INTEGRATIVE DEFINITION

The article provides a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the concept of linguistic identity in contemporary Ukrainian research, considering the interdisciplinary nature of this phenomenon. The relevance of the topic is determined by the transformation of the role of language in modern Ukrainian society, where linguistic identity acquires not only cultural and communicative but also worldview and security significance. Linguistic identity is conceptualized as a dynamic phenomenon formed at the intersection of individual experience, social practices, historical memory, and political choice. Based on the analysis of recent Ukrainian linguistic and related sociohumanitarian studies, the article highlights methodological and terminological diversity in approaches to defining linguistic identity. A systematization of these approaches is proposed along five main directions: socio-political, psycholinguistic, cognitive-ontological, historical-retrospective, and informational-network. Special attention is given to the methodological distinction between language as a system, linguistic practice as the actual use of this system, and linguistic identity as a form of language-based self-awareness. It is argued that in the Ukrainian socio cultural context, language choice often functions as a conscious public act and serves as a marker of civilizational and value orientation. As a result, the study formulates a generalized definition of linguistic identity as a processual, multidimensional form of self-awareness of both individuals and communities, grounded in conscious language choice, regular linguistic practices, internalization of language as a symbolic resource, and reinforced through historical and social experience. The proposed classification of approaches provides a methodological foundation for further linguistic and interdisciplinary research on linguistic identity in contemporary Ukraine.
