ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MACHINE TRANSLATION SYSTEMS IN MODERN PUBLICISTIC TEXTS RENDERING

The article is devoted to machine translation, the role of which cannot be exaggerated in the modern world. The focus of the article is on the advantages and disadvantages of certain machine translation systems in the process of rendering of English-language Internet publicistic texts. Accuracy, grammatical and pragmatic correctness of translation of publicistic texts are key factors for their adequate perception and understanding by the audience. Analysis of translations indicates the presence of linguistic, textual and functional-pragmatic errors. Linguistic errors involve a mischievous word equivalent, misdefined relations in auxiliary verbs, misalignment of verb tense forms, noun-pronoun pair mismatch, noun-adjective/adjective pair mismatch, irregular case and gender of nouns, inconsistency of subject and predicate grammatical genders, and misuse of correlative conjunctions. Among the textual errors, the inaccurate translation of the term, the literal translation that does not correspond to the context, unnecessary details that distort the context, incorrect word order, verbosity and the use of Russianisms are highlighted. Functional and pragmatic errors involve incorrect reproduction of semantic shades of word meanings, inappropriate choice of the equivalent of a multi-meaning word, syntactic literalism and distortion of the emotional content of the original. System analysis of machine translation errors based on modern English Internet publicistic texts allows us to reveal the main problems and challenges faced by machine systems when working with highly informative texts that have a specific style and vocabulary, and to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of machine translation programs and determine the possibilities of their improvement. The article also emphasizes the special role of the human factor during machine translation of texts, in particular in the process of pre-editing and post-editing, especially in the context of complex and important materials available on the Internet.
